Happy Memorial Day! - A Day to Reflect on the True Meaning

Happy Memorial Day everyone!  I thought I'd write a post reflecting on Memorial Day. I'll sum it up in a post I found on Facebook with a few other facts to follow it. I know I've had people thank me for my service on Memorial Day, which is fine, but I usually gently remind them what Memorial Day is really for.
"I’m going to say this as gently as possible; please accept it in the spirit that it is offered.
Please do not thank a veteran this weekend. We have our day in November. This weekend is for our friends, our brothers and sisters who paid the ultimate sacrifice and gave their lives in the cause of freedom.
When you thank us, as sincere as it is, it reminds us that we came home, while they did not. Somehow, for us, it lessens the solemnity of the day and heightens our survivor guilt.
We appreciate your gratitude. We are embarrassed by it, but we appreciate it. But please, please, this weekend, remember it is not about service, it is about sacrifice.
And while willing, we did not make that sacrifice. . ."

Fortunately and Unfortunately I never had the chance to deploy while I was in the Air Force. I say fortunately because I would have had to spend time away from my son (and at the time) my wife. I would have missed all the experiences of a toddler. On the other hand I would have liked to have deployed. I've met many veterans that have some great stories from their deployments. Unfortunately not everyone that deploys gets to make it home, and that's what this day is for. So while everyone is enjoying a great weekend take a second to think about those people.

Memorial Day
This may make you think about Memorial Day a little differently.

Here's a touching tribute to those that died on D-day. This one is a tear jerkers for sure.
