My son came home from his mother's with a sound problem on his Kindle Fire HD last weekend. After searching the web several times I finally found a solution buried in a forum post. Apparently some apps can crash/disable your sound. My son had installed Talkatone on his tablet. It disables a hidden sound feature on the Kindle that you can’t reverse. To fix this you need to install “Quick Mute Volume Control” from the Amazon app store. Luckily it’s a free app.
Open this app and raise all the volume controls. Once you exit the app you will need to restart the Kindle. This did the trick for my son’s Kindle. Hopefully this will help some others out there with there sound issues.
